Author Michelle Birkenstock spends time with students during the K-2 assembly at Horizons on the Hudson in Newburgh. (June 8, 2012)

Local author Michelle Birkenstock spoke to students at Horizons on the Hudson in Newburgh during two special assemblies recently, according to a news release issued by the Newburgh Enlarged School District Thursday.

During the June 8 program, 34 students who created activities and projects that were inspired by characters or themes in one of Birkenstock's two books, "Harry the Caterpillar" and "Baxter's Hibernation," qualified for lunch with the author as well as a complimentary copy of one of her books.

A portion of the complimentary books were made available by a Lend Lease Foundations Grant received by employee Charmaine Moshier on behalf of Horizons. In addition, activities and projects created by students will be compiled in an activity book which will be on sale at Horizon on the Hudson next school year.
