Bomb scare prompts Route 46 closure in Ridgefield Park

Authorities thought a man had a bomb in his car.

RIDGEFIELD PARK - A bomb scare closed Route 46 in Ridgefield Park for hours today.

Authorities say the driver of a Rav4 flagged them down and began acting erratically. Then, they say he locked himself in the car.

Police say they broke a window, pepper-sprayed the man and brought him to an area hospital. Authorities say they then discovered what appeared to be a grenade in the car.

Investigators eventually determined that it was a salt and pepper shaker.

About 15-20 houses were evacuated as a precaution.

Police say the driver will not be charged.
