Amazon opens pickup site at Stony Brook University

Online giant Amazon has opened a pick-up location at Stony Brook University, allowing customers to pick up and return Amazon orders.

Stony Brook University partnered with Amazon Campus to provide students, faculty, staff and area residents with a location to pick up and return textbooks and other purchases ordered through Amazon.

Amazon and Stony Brook University representatives will celebrate the formal opening of the Amazon@StonyBrook pick-up location Thursday morning. The location, in the lower level of the Frank Melville Jr. Library, will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

The pick-up site allows Amazon Student and Prime members to receive free one-day pick-up on select items, including required textbooks. Students can order their new, used, rental and digital textbooks and other course materials through Stony Brook’s custom Amazon website, at

Stony Brook University is the first college campus in New York State and one of 15 colleges in the United States to offer an Amazon Pick Up location. In return, a percentage of the proceeds are invested back into the university through scholarships and student employment, Stony Brook spokeswoman Alida Almonte said.

Starting this fall, Amazon became the official textbook provider for Stony Brook. The university is one of three universities for which Amazon is the official bookstore.

Barnes & Noble continues to operate three campus retail stores at Stony Brook, selling officially licensed university apparel and merchandise.
