The Salvation Army hopes to beef up the ranks of one of the most telltale symbols of the approaching holiday season: its bell ringers.

The charity will recruit for its Christmas program at the Suffolk County One-Stop Employment Center in Riverhead on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The group wants to staff eastern Long Island locations.

The job pays $7.50 an hour. Bell ringers must be able to greet the public in “a courteous and friendly manner,” the charity says.
