A Comtech Telecommunications Corp. subsidiary will receive an additional $4 million from the federal government to develop a communications system for the Navy, the Melville-based company announced Tuesday.

The company’s Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp. is developing the Advanced Time Division Multiple Access Interface Processor that will be a component in a military communications system. After testing is completed, the component is expected to be installed on ships, submarines and on shore and is part of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, known as SPAWAR.

Comtech’s project has received $8.5 million of funding, including the additional award announced Tuesday.

"This next generation development project presents us with a tremendous opportunity to help the U.S. Navy expand its capabilities and reduce communication costs,” Fred Kornberg, Comtech president and chief executive, said in a news release.
