Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo tapped the presidents of Long Island’s largest business group and private university today to lead a regional council charged with creating jobs.
Kevin Law of the Long Island Association, right, and Stuart Rabinowitz of Hofstra University, left, will serve as co-chairman of a 22-member economic development council. The local council is one of 10 statewide that will compete for $1 billion in grants and tax credits from Albany during 2011-12.
Other council members include Desmond Ryan, executive director of the developers’ group Association for a Better Long Island; Patricia McMahon, a top executive at defense contractor Northrop Grumman; Harvey Kamil, vice chairman of vitamin maker NBTY Inc., and James D’Addario, president of guitar string manufacturer D’Addario & Co.
Council members will serve with no pay for two years. They are facing a November deadline to submit a five-year development plan that then will compete for $200 million in state aid.
Lt. Gov. Robert J. Duffy will oversee each of the 10 councils.
Speaking at SUNY Old Westbury, Cuomo said Long Islanders must look beyond county, town and village boundaries to foster business growth that will keep young people here.
"This is the opportunity to do it," Cuomo told more than 200 people gathered in the student union building. "We have the incentive on the table…We’ve organized the state agencies. You cannot blame the state anymore…The rest is up to you."
The county executives and supervisors of Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Brookhaven and Islip will serve as advisers to the local council.
