The state’s economic development agency on Thursday approved a $2.4-million grant for commercial renovations on the Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont.
The business area is just southeast of Belmont Park racetrack on the Queens border.
The Empire State Development Corporation's board of directors OK'd the money as part of a $40 million series of project approvals statewide, which it said would keep about 1,700 jobs in New York State while adding more than 300 new jobs.
"In recent years the community has experienced a loss of viable businesses, high vacancy rates, unemployment and neighborhood blight," the agency said in a news release.
"The project will rehabilitate and reconstruct 12 existing business and mixed use properties and demolish obsolete properties that will be architecturally consistent with nearby properties."
