Homeowners at risk of foreclosure can get help in Uniondale Thursday and Friday.
The state Department of Financial Services will send its mobile command center to the Town of Hempstead Municipal Lot, 400 Uniondale Ave., across from the Uniondale Library. The van will be there from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.
Department representatives can help homeowners apply for mortgage modifications and communicate with lenders, and they can also field complaints about alleged lending abuses. Federally approved housing counselors also will offer assistance.
In a news release, the Department of Financial Services urged homeowners to be wary of any business that demands an upfront fee for a loan modification or asks the homeowner to transfer the home's deed.
The state's toll-free foreclosure hotline, 800-342-3736, can be reached from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Homeowners also can file complaints at dfs.ny.gov.
