Upscale food retailer The Fresh Market will open its new store in Smithtown next week.

The doors will open July 22 at 8 a.m. at the 24,099-square-foot store in the Branch Plaza shopping center, 138 E. Main St. The new store, the North Carolina company's second on Long Island and the fifth in the state, will bring about 90 new jobs to the area, most of which are being filled locally, company officials said.

"We are excited to open our new store in Smithtown and to expand our reach in New York," said Sean Crane, the company's interim chief executive. "We look forward to introducing The Fresh Market's concept of quality, great tasting food, excellent customer service and a distinctive atmosphere to an expanded customer base."

Opening-day activities will include chef demonstrations, food sampling throughout the store and gift card drawings. A sample-sized bag of the company's gourmet coffee and a reusable shopping bag will be given free to the first 1,000 customers.

The Fresh Market's stores are designed to convey the atmosphere of a European market, featuring a butcher shop, bakery, produce and floral stands, and a delicatessen.

The publicly traded company, founded in 1982, operates 172 stores in 27 states. The chain opened its first Long Island store in November 2013 in a 25,000-square-foot space in the high-end Woodbury Common shopping center on Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury.
