Gap Inc. has closed its New Hyde Park store, which has been in the Lake Success Shopping Center for 30 years, according to the center’s managing agent.
San Francisco-based Gap Inc. -- which counts the Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta among its brands -- has been shrinking its North American store footprint since 2007.
By 2013, it intends to cut its Gap specialty store group in North America by 34 percent from 2007 levels, according to company documents. The New Hyde Park store closing is a result of its long-term real estate strategy that was outlined in 2007, said a company spokeswoman.
“We’re constantly re-evaluating our real estate portfolio to ensure we have the right stores in the right places to best serve our customers,” said Kimberly Terry, a Gap spokeswoman.
The company declined to say how many people the New Hyde Park store employed, but Terry said it is trying to place employees who want to stay with the company in open positions at another Gap location or at its other brands.
“We have a strong track record of placing the majority of employees at either another Gap location or at one of our sister brands,” Terry said.
Robert Peck, the Lake Success Shopping Center’s managing agent, said the store closing is a disappointment, especially in a shopping center that has been doing “better than well.”
Some of the other shopping center tenants include Bed Bath & Beyond, Red Mango, Victoria’s Secret and Modell's.
“The days of a Gap on every corner are over,” Peck said.
Gap’s stores grew, “too many too fast,” he said. “It’s like anything else, how many dishes can you cook in the kitchen? You’ve got to be able to watch them in order for them to come out right.”
