West Hempstead-based National Wholesale Liquidators Inc., a chain of stores specializing in discounts and closeouts, plans to lay off 140 workers on Long Island after undergoing a "liquidation process," according to a state filing.

The company plans to lay off the 140 workers at its West Hempstead location and 252 more at locations upstate and in New York City, according to the filing. The company listed its overall headcount at 458.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification dated Thursday said the employees would be laid off 30 to 60 days "after [the] liquidation process." The filing didn't explain what that process would be.

The company's chief executive, Scott Rosen, didn't return phone calls Wednesday seeking comment.

National Wholesale Liquidators, which once had a presence across the Northeast and part of the Midwest, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2008, which converted to a Chapter 7 case the following year in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware.

In Chapter 7 bankruptcy, sometimes known as liquidation bankruptcy, companies under the supervision of a trustee are forced to sell assets to pay off creditors. It differs from Chapter 11, where a company reorganizes its debt and attempts to emerge as a going concern.

NSC Wholesale Holdings LLC acquired some of the company's assets in bankruptcy and started doing business under the National Wholesale Liquidators name.

In addition to the property at 111 Hempstead Tpke. in West Hempstead, the company announced plans to lay off 60 workers in Flushing; 48 in Rosedale; 58 in Long Island City; 64 in the Bronx, and 22 in upstate Middletown.

The company's website, which promotes a "treasure hunt shopping experience," also lists locations in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Lodi and Jersey City in New Jersey.

The layoffs come four months after the company announced it was the successful bidder for a Toys R Us lease at a store at 5520 Sunrise Hwy. in Massapequa. In June the company said that store — which was not included in the WARN filing — would be its 13th retail location.

National Wholesale Liquidators sells closeout and discounted branded merchandise, including housewares, appliances, food, clothing, furniture and other categories.

In August 2017 the company launched its first e-commerce website.

Calls seeking comment from the owner of the property at 111 Hempstead Tpke. and from the Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee were not immediately returned.
