A high-school football action photo of a West Babylon receiver leaping to snag a pass, as a Bellport defender approaches, has won national recognition for the Riverhead freelance photographer who snapped the picture.

The photog, George Faella, was chosen by Lake Success-based Canon U.S.A. as a finalist — an "Action Photo Honorable Mention" — in the company's nationwide photo contest titled "Why Do You Love Football?"

Faella’s professional photo website shows he's a devoted follower of Riverhead youth sports.

His winning Canon photo was taken at a Sept. 11 West Babylon vs. Bellport game.
Faella, who works at Newsday as a pressroom electrician, is also a freelance photographer whose work has appeared in Newsday and other publications. That's just a portion above left. To see the whole thing a bit larger click here.
