Hicksville-based mattress retailer Sleepy's on Monday said it opened its 1,000th store in the United States in Joliet, Illinois.

The company operates retail stores in 16 states, mainly in the Northeast, as well as 11 distribution centers.

"Sleepy’s has been around since 1957, and we are very proud of this latest accomplishment. It won’t stop here," company president David Acker said in a statement.

Sleepy's said it will celebrate the milestone by offering special price deals at its stores. The company also launched a sweepstakes giving shoppers an opportunity to walk away with free goods.

Though the Long Island company is expanding, Sleepy's has said it plans to remain in the region. In 2009, the company accepted $1.5 million in New York State aid in return for staffing at least 551 jobs on Long Island. The company honored that, and reported 612 local workers in a 2012 audit by the Empire State Development Corp.

The Joliet store, however, is not the most recent Sleepy's to open. The company said it has opened five more showrooms since the Illinois store opened its doors.
