Kohl's and Toys R Us will hire more than 700 seasonal workers on Long Island in the coming weeks as the holiday hiring season kicks off before the biggest shopping season of the year.

Kohl's Corp. expects to hire an average of 50 associates per store for its five locations on Long Island, a spokeswoman said Wednesday. The retailer, headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, said it plans to hire more than 69,000 seasonal workers at its 1,166 stores nationally through mid-November, up from 67,000 in the 2014 holiday season.

Kohl's also anticipates hiring for about 9,500 seasonal positions at distribution and e-commerce fulfillment centers across the country and 660 seasonal credit operations positions.

On Long Island, typical seasonal jobs include freight processing and customer service. Some seasonal store associates will help fulfill orders, the spokeswoman said.

Wayne, New Jersey-based Toys R Us plans to hire an average of 60 associates per store for its eight stores on Long Island. The chain said it expects to hire 40,000 seasonal employees at its stores and distribution centers throughout the country, down from 45,000 last holiday season.

Toys R Us, which has more than 860 stores in the United States, including Babies R Us, will start interviewing for seasonal positions starting this month, with new hires starting work in October. Seasonal store employees will average 18 to 20 hours per week, and up to 30 hours during peak season. Last year, 20 percent of the chain's holiday hires retained positions after Christmas, the company said.

Available seasonal positions at Toys R Us stores vary from sales employees and stock crew to teams that fill online orders for store pickup. Full- and part-time seasonal workers will also be hired for its distribution centers, including warehouse workers, department managers and online fulfillment coordinators.

Both Toys R Us and Kohl's declined to disclose specific wage information.
