MSC Industrial Direct Co., one of the largest public companies headquartered on Long Island, has moved into its brand-new co-headquarters in Davidson, N.C.

The Melville-based supplier of industrial tools and supplies said last year that it planned to build a second headquarters in Davidson, a Charlotte suburb, to have more access to employees with industrial skills. It has also said it has no plans to leave Long Island.

The company inaugurated the new six-story, 180,000-square-foot facility on Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony with elected officials, business partners, community representatives and employees, the company said in a statement.

The building has enough capacity for 750 employees. And the company has room to expand on the property in the future. MSC has about 150 employees in the Davidson offices and plans to hire 50 more before the end of 2014.

Earlier this year, MSC, which had about 700 employees on Long Island, said 120 would be transferred to Davidson.

“The investments we are making in MSC are going to ensure a strong growth path well into the future,” said MSC’s president and chief executive Erik Gershwind. “We looked long and hard to find a place that would serve us well along that path, and Davison fit all of our criteria.”
