Defense contractor Telephonics Corp. has named Richard Hines to the newly created post of chief technology officer, the company announced Monday.

Hines, an 18-year veteran of the Farmingdale company, will lead engineering and technology development and will report to Chief Operating Officer Kevin McSweeney.

Hines was named corporate vice president, engineering, in 2010, overseeing the company's staff of 270 engineers.

"Rich's breadth of engineering knowledge, deep aerospace and defense industry experience, and proven ability to deliver meaningful results makes him ideally suited for the role of CTO," Joseph J. Battaglia, Telephonics president and chief executive, said in a statement.

Telephonics, a maker of communications, radar and sensor products, is a subsidiary of Griffon Corp., based in Manhattan.
