Pitney Bowes Presort Services, a business unit of global data management and mail services provider Pitney Bowes Inc., will lay off 60 of the 85 employees at its Long Island location, according to a notice filed with the state last week.
The company's Hicksville operation, located at 22 Miller Place, specializes in mail sorting and postage metering as a work-share partner of the United States Postal Service. The state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice lists the reason for the layoffs as "economic."
"This workforce reduction is part of a larger strategy to better serve our clients and improve the efficiency of our Presort Services operations," Brett Cody, external communications manager for Pitney Bowes, said in a company statement.
"We will continue to process some client mail on Long Island," he said.
In early December, Marc Lautenbach, chief executive of Pitney Bowes, announced that the Stamford, Connecticut-based company would see flat or reduced employment levels in 2015 as a cost-saving measure, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The company has 32 presort operation locations in the United States and processes more than 14 billion pieces of mail each year. The layoffs are scheduled to begin March 30.
