Gartner’s report defines information stewardship applications as “business solutions used by business users acting in the role of information steward (interpreting and enforcing information governance policy, for example).” It states that the market comprises vendors including the following capabilities (two or more) in their packaged or future-stated solutions: information model; data quality monitoring and profiling, business glossary (which would integrate with a data dictionary); analytics (on the data, model usage, glossary status, workflow performance, business rules usage, and business benefit measured as a result of the work of information governance and stewardship); workflow/exception management, business rules and policy management, playbooks or preloaded templates; and audit trail/organizational memory. It also adds that “information stewardship applications also provide, or seek to provide, a user interface targeted at the business user role of information steward.”
The report’s authors recommend that chief data officers (CDOs) and information stewards “include in your software technology evaluation the application needs of information stewards performing business functions” and “match the needs for information stewardship capabilities over multiple information-related projects with solutions specific to this market space.”
