Museum of the City of New York Hosts New York City History Day Celebration and Launch on Monday, October 21, 2013

The Battle of the Brains to Snag the City Title Begins This Month

New York, N.Y. (PRWEB) October 18, 2013

The Museum of the City of New York celebrates the 24th annual New York City History Day 2014 with a special program highlighting student achievement from the past year. During the launch event, parents, educators, and students that are new to the program will be able to view exceptional projects from the 2013 competition as well as a lively student performance and panel. Attendees will also learn about registering for the upcoming contest.

New York City History Day 2014 is an educational competition – only held at City Museum—that engages students in grades 6 to 12 in the discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students decide on a topic centered on a theme and work individually or in small groups to create an exhibit board, original website, multimedia documentary, dramatic performance, or research paper. The students then present those projects in front of judges and the exceptional presentations move on to the next level—New York State History Day 2014.

The theme for this year’s New York City History Day 2014 is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” This means participants can choose a topic that allows them to explore their own interests, whether it’s the arts, sciences, politics, or education, and then immerse themselves in the history behind the subject matter. As students start to assemble their projects they will be asked to continually reflect on the theme and ponder questions such as: What are rights? Are responsibilities always attached to rights? Are there times when rights protect some
while disenfranchising others—and is that fair?
