Long Island’s fastest growing comprehensive eye care provider, North Shore Eye Care, today announced the merger of noted Long Island eye surgeon, Kathleen Van Valkenburg, MD as part of their ongoing effort to increase ophthalmic coverage in their new Garden City practice, according to Jeffrey Martin, MD, medical director and managing partner of North Shore Eye Care.

“We are extremely proud to welcome Dr. Van Valkenburg to our growing family of eye care specialists across Long Island,” said Dr. Martin. “She has served the comprehensive ophthalmic and surgical eye care needs of families across Long Island for more than 20 years,” he said, “and she takes great pride in the long-term multi-generational relationships she has built over the year.” Dr. Martin pointed out that Dr. Van Valkenburg - whose expertise includes the surgical and medical management of glaucoma, cataracts and refractive surgery – will be seeing patients in the new North Shore Eye Care office in Garden City located at 520 Franklin Avenue, Suite 251.

With their expansion of the new Garden City practice, North Shore Eye Care now offers patients convenient access to practices in Smithtown, Riverhead, Holbrook, Deer Park, Southampton, Southold, Queens, and Hempstead. “Since my father, Dr. Sidney Martin, founded our practice on Long Island more than 52 years ago, our focus at North Shore Eye Care has always been to provide men and women of all ages – including infants and children – the same level of superior eye care found in major medical centers around the world…right here on Long Island. Our continued expansion into Garden City and the merger with Dr. Van Valkenburg is simply another step in our journey to continue to serve as Long Island’s preferred ophthalmology provider.”

Dr. Van Valkenburg received a Masters of Science degree from New York University and completed additional pre-medical studies at Columbia University. During medical school at New York University, she did research at Manhattan Eye & Ear Hospital in diseases of the retina and macula. Her research and publication in Fluorescein Angiography became the impetus to pursue a career in Ophthalmology. She completed her residency at North Shore University and prior to joining North Shore Eye Care was in private practice in Manhasset and Garden City for over twenty years.

Joining Dr. Van Valkeburg in the new Garden City office will be cosmetic eye surgeon Samuel Baharestani, MD and William S. Kasper, M.D., F.A.C.S., who specializes in age-related diseases of the eye. Dr. Baharestani is a Fellowship-trained, board-certified ophthalmic plastic surgeon, is a Fellow of the American Society for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kasper is the Emeritus Acting Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology of Winthrop-University Hospital, Mineola, N.Y. and has been listed in the prestigious Castle and Connolly publication, "How to Find the Best Doctors: New York Metro Area," for the last 16 years, an honor bestowed by patients and colleagues. As past Presidents of the Long Island Ophthalmological Society, and the Ophthalmology Section of the Nassau Academy of Medicine, he has contributed both to the scientific and educational information of its members.

“The expertise, training and experience offered by Dr. Van Valkenburg, Dr. Baharestani and Dr. Kasper in our Garden City office is truly unmatched anywhere on Long Island,” said Dr. Martin. “People of all ages across the greater Garden City area are fortunate to have access to some of the finest comprehensive eye care available today.”

“Joining the medical staff of one of New York’s premiere ophthalmology practices is truly an honor,” said Dr. Van Valkenburg. “The tradition of excellence North Shore Eye Care has established over the past 52 years is remarkable, and I could not be more proud to join a team of professionals who are committed to the highest level of patient care.”

“There is a growing need for cosmetic, glaucoma, cataract and reconstructive eye care services in Garden City and we look forward to caring for our friends, neighbors, loved ones – and new patients across Garden City – who trust North Shore Eye Care with something as precious as your vision,” said Dr. Martin.
