The 12 Mbps "handicap" associated with today's USB isolators has been eliminated allowing designers to achieve galvanic isolation of USB ports without sacrificing performance.

Silanna Semiconductor announces the introduction of the ICE08USBA and ICE08USBB, the industry's first USB 2.0 High-speed digital isolator devices. The ICE08USBx series of USB port isolators are part of Silanna's Isolator Core Enhanced (ICE) family of products featuring galvanic isolation technology that combines capacitive isolation and CMOS circuitry on a Silicon-On-Sapphire (SOS) platform. The ICE08USBx devices integrate high performance isolator cores with standard USB port functionality to provide 3.0 kV(rms) isolation of the bidirectional USB data lines operating up to 480 Mbps. The ICE08USBx devices are capable of operating in all USB 2.0 speed modes - low speed (1.5 Mbps), full speed (12 Mbps), and high speed (480 Mbps); the operating speed is automatically detected from the USB data stream.
"The ICE08USBA and ICE08USBB devices eliminate the 12 Mbps ‘speed penalty’ associated with existing USB isolation solutions," said Gil Baterina, senior product marketing manager, Isolator Products, Silanna Semiconductor. “The ICE08USBx’s ability to operate at 480 Mbps offers a 40X improvement in isolated USB data rate performance which is needed in today's information and data intensive applications and environments,” added Mark Drucker, Chief Operating Officer, Silanna Semiconductor.
ICE08USBA is optimized for isolating the data lines of a USB 2.0 downstream facing port (DFP); these typically utilize USB-A type connectors on USB hosts, hubs, or compound devices. In addition to operating with nominal 3.3 V power supply voltages, the downstream side of the ICE08USBA can be optionally powered by USB bus voltages ranging from 4.5 V to 5.5 V.
ICE08USBB is designed to isolate the data lines of a USB 2.0 upstream facing port (UFP); these typically use USB-B type connectors on USB peripherals or hubs. The upstream side of the ICE08USBB can be optionally powered from the VBUS of the attached cable.
The combination of ICE08USBx devices' high speed and high voltage isolation capabilities makes it ideal for high performance applications that also require galvanic isolation such as USB ports in industrial systems, medical devices, infotainment units, and even high-end AV equipment.
