Hiisi Masonry Heater Ranks High in Efficiency, Emissions, Overall Product

Tulikivi’s Hiisi 4 fireplace made an impression at the Wood Stove Decathlon held on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
The competition was heated, to say the least and Tulikivi was selected as one of 12 finalists (out of 34 international entries) in the Wood Stove Design Challenge, the first international competition to build an affordable, cleaner wood stove for residential heating, sponsored in part by Popular Mechanics magazine. The Challenge, an initiative of the Alliance for Green Heat, concluded with the Wood Stove Decathlon, November 15-19, 2013.
Each entry was judged on renewability, efficiency, cleanliness, and cost, as well as the overall product. John Ackerly, president of the Alliance for Green Heat said, “The goal is to get people to be aware that this technology is efficient. We need to get wood stoves a facelift by showing there really is a high-tech future.”
Tulikivi’s entry, the new-to-the-United States, Hiisi 4, is the company’s compact hybrid fireplace, and is especially well-suited to modern low-energy construction projects and packs a lot of ingenuity in its clean line design.
Judges awarded the Hiisi second place in heating efficiency, third place in lowest carbon monoxide emissions and fourth place overall—notable achievements given the caliber of the competition. The Hiisi fireplaces already meet the world’s tightest emission standards set to take effect in 2015.
“The Hiisi’s heat retaining soapstone releases heat slowly, and in the form of soft, pleasant radiant heat, often described like the warmth of the sun on a cool, cloudy day,” said Päivi Saarelainen, North American marketing and sales manager for Tulikivi. “These new Hiisi fireplaces produce heat very effectively. In addition, this is a low emission-hybrid fireplace with a firebox that can burn both pellets and wood. This is a breakthrough innovation in fireplaces of this size.”
The option of heating water with a fireplace will also play a big role in future home heating trends, Tulikivi’s consumer research shows. In 2013, Tulikivi introduced its W10 Heat Absorber water heating system in North America, which allows heat to be distributed more evenly throughout the entire home and reduce high hot water heating bills at the same time.
The next Wood Stove Design Challenge and Decathlon is expected to occur in 2015.
