The best places for young families to live in New York include Long Island communities, among them Stony Brook, Massapequa Park, Wantagh, Commack, Holtsville and Bellmore, according to NerdWallet.com.

NerdWallet.com compiled the numbers from the 2013 American Community Survey by the Census Bureau and used four categories to create a young families score.

Home affordability based on median home value accounts for 30 percent; growth and prosperity of family income from 1999 to 2013 counts for 20 percent; family friendliness with married couples with at least one child under 18 as 30 percent; and educational quality based on data from GreatSchools.org.
