Retail Roundup: LI Modell's location to close in January, official says

The Riverhead Centre location is too large for the chain's "stores of the future," the leasing official said.

The Modell’s Sporting Goods in Riverhead is calling it quits in early 2019.

The store in Riverhead Centre, at 1440 Old Country Rd., Suite 200, will close Jan. 31, said Nancy Erickson, from the Parsippany, New Jersey, office of Colliers International, the Toronto-based real estate firm that oversees leasing for the shopping center.

Modell’s, whose lease in Riverhead expires Jan. 31, is closing the store because the space “is too large for their stores of the future,” said Erickson, an executive managing director of retail services at Colliers.

Opened in August 2003, the Riverhead store occupies 20,667 square feet, she said.

Signs are posted in the store’s windows stating, “Store closing sale.  This location only.”

The shopping center’s other tenants include ShopRite, Home Depot, Petco, Bed Bath & Beyond and Best Buy.

Founded in 1889, Modell’s sells sports apparel, shoes, equipment and accessories online and at its more than 150 stores in nine states and Washington, D.C.

The chain has 16 stores on Long Island, including in Huntington, Farmingdale and Sayville.

Manhattan-based Modell’s did not return calls for comment.
