The Tanger Outlets in Deer Park and Riverhead have installed electric vehicle-charging stations and will soon add solar power as part of the company's nationwide initiative to promote alternative energy usage.
Greensboro, North Carolina-based Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. announced this week that an electric vehicle-charging network will be available at 23 Tanger locations in the United States, including Deer Park and Riverhead, in anticipation of increasing demand from shoppers who own electric vehicles.
Tanger has partnered with Campbell, California-based ChargePoint Networks Inc. to develop and maintain the network, providing multiple spaces for electric vehicle owners to fuel up for free while they shop. The Deer Park and Riverhead locations each have six charging stations in place and ready for use; each station can charge two cars.
Electric car owners will need a ChargePoint membership card to start the session. If they don't have a card, they can call an 800 number on the charging station, which will allow them to begin their session and charge their vehicle.
Tanger also has solar projects in development at the Deer Park and Riverhead locations in conjunction with the Long Island Power Authority's feed-in tariff program, which buys solar energy from businesses and others. Those projects, set to begin construction later this year, are expected to generate about 1,500 kilowatts for Tanger Outlets Deer Park and 2,500 kilowatts for Tanger Outlets Riverhead.
In addition, Tanger will continue LED and induction lighting conversions nationwide.
Tanger owns and operates 46 shopping centers in 24 states and in Canada.
