Tech Review: Apps to get you ready for football season

The NFL season opens Thursday, although the Jets and Giants don't kick off until the following Sunday. These free apps can keep you updated and entertained all the way to Super Bowl 50 in February.

NFL Mobile

(iOS, Android; free)

The official app from the NFL is a must-have, although it can still be infuriating at times. The app offers exclusive content from the NFL Network and has a robust video collection covering all 32 teams. As in years past, NFL Mobile has free features that can be accessed only by Verizon Wireless customers, such as live streams of games nationally broadcast on CBS, ESPN, FOX and NBC. Users still complain of frequent crashes and intrusive ads.

New York Giants Mobile

(iOS, Android; free)

This official app of the New York Giants has been redesigned for the 2015 season. In addition to matchups, interviews and a live stream of the Big Blue Kickoff pregame show, there are numerous podcasts uploaded during the week with analysis of past and upcoming games. During Giants games, the app has real-time stats and drive charts.

Official New York Jets

(iOS, Android; free)

Like New York Giants Mobile, this app comes from developer YinzCam Sports and is the only official app of the Jets. In addition to stats, scores and podcasts, you can access videos of postgame news conferences. The app has a strong social network connection, so you can follow the real-time rants and raves of Jets fans as they appear on Twitter. For fans of teams other than the Jets or Giants, YinzCam offers official apps for most NFL teams.

NFL Fantasy Football

(iOS, Android; free)

There are numerous apps that handle your fantasy football leagues and statistics, but because NFL Fantasy Football is from the NFL itself, there are a few bells and whistles you can't get elsewhere. For example, NFL Fantasy Football has what it calls "integrated highlights" -- videos of key plays that affect your roster. Those not satisfied with how this app handles their leagues can check out ESPN Fantasy Football, Yahoo Fantasy Sports and CBS Sports Fantasy. All are free for Android and iOS.
