From Bulgaria to Belle Terre

The Countess Nadia de Navarro Farber of Belle Terre was a

musical comedy star in her native Bulgaria, married a Spanish diplomat, and

lived in Monte Carlo for many years, all before World War II.

Then she moved to New York, married a real-estate developer named Sid, and

settled down on Long Island.

Today, the twice-widowed countess is the titular head of Sid Farber

Enterprises, which owns 500,000 square feet of commercial and residential real

estate on Long Island and recently acquired the Bellport outlet malls.

In her leisure time, the Countess entertains friends at her 12-acre estate

in Belle Terre, a three-story, 30,000-square-foot "pink house on a hill"

overlooking Long Island Sound, according to Yuri Farber, a friend of 27 years

not related to her second husband, who died in 1985.

The Countess also maintains an apartment on Central Park South and a faux

Moorish-style castle she personally designed in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin

Islands, where she spends four months of every year.

The Countess, who declines to give her age, was born to a noble family in

Pleven, Bulgaria, and starred in several black-and-white movies in Bulgaria and

Hungary before marrying her first husband, a Spanish count who served as a

diplomat to the Vatican, he said. After her first husband died in the 1940s,

she moved to New York. During lunch at the Plaza Hotel one day, friends

introduced her to Sid Farber, a Long Island native who was just starting a

home-development business, Farber said. The two were later married.

In the post-war era, the business operated by the Countess and her husband

built more than 15,000 homes on Long Island, many of them designed for the

moderate-income families then flocking to the suburbs. In the 1980s, the

company refocused on luxury homes. In recent years, it has returned to

medium-priced homes as well as shopping centers and office buildings.

In an interview in 1987, the Countess estimated her wealth to be in the

area of $100 million.
