For those who prefer their greenery with holes instead of flowers, it's time to tee up the apps.

Several companies offer GPS programs for smart phones that can tell you where your ball is in relation to the green and the driving distance of each shot. Some are available for a flat fee, others require a subscription. Some offer trial versions.

For example, Sonocaddie Golf GPS (iPhone and Android) offers a free "lite" version that allows you to download one course. Those who putter around can upgrade to the full version for $34.99, giving you access to more than 25,000 courses around the world, including many on Long Island.

And for those who care less about where their ball lies and more about whether their golf partners are telling the truth, the U.S. Golf Association offers "Rules of Golf" (iPhone, Android and BlackBerry) for $3.99.
