I’ve been on a bit of a kick lately with mobile games on the App store for my new iPhone 4. That being said I look for games that take full advantage of the new Retina display. I’m a big fan of unique games that are addicting, fun to play and have great visuals. Osmos hits all these nails right on the head.
The title invites the idea of osmosis.
“The tendency of a fluid, usually water, to pass through a semipermeable membrane into a solution where the solvent concentration is higher” – Dictionary.com
Which defines the game pretty spot on. You are a round cell like being that is bound by this basic principal. Larger bodies will absorb you, smaller bodies you can absorb to make yourself larger. Based on this, the game sets different objectives for you to meet e.g. get huge, absorb the targets, become the biggest etc.
Move your cell around the levels by ejecting small bubbles of your overall mass to propel you in any direction. Tap the screen around your orb to propel yourself, but be careful not to expel too much of yourself or you’ll lose your mass. Get too small and you’ll be unable to absorb other masses on the levels.
Osmos’s overall mood, gameplay, soundtrack and awesome visuals make it a uniquely addictive game you’ll keep coming back to. Originally for PC, this game has been re-mastered for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and comes together beautifully as one of the best mobile apps I’ve played. App is priced at $2.99 for iPod and iPhone and $4.99 for iPad.
