Platform: XBOX360, PS3
Genre: Third Person Shooter, Action
Third person shooters are not the highest game genre on my list of must haves. But when Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami cooks up a title with such an interesting premise, I have to dive in.
Vanquish is a title that will not only challenge your shooting skills, but will beat your confidence into a bloody pulp. The game play is intense; fast paced and will keep your adrenaline pumping as you nullify waves of enemy robots. If you’re looking for a challenging title that will keep you on the edge of your couch, strap in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
The game is set in the near to distant future where the US has created an orbital space station to harness the power of the sun for energy. All is well in good until Russian extremist decide to crash the party and turn the space station into a weapon of mass destruction. Enter DARPA, a research company who develops cutting edge military technology such as the ARS suit of which our hero Sam Gideon wears to help the military engage the enemy and take back the space station.
Outfitted with 4 weapons including EMP and regular grenades Sam can actively switch between 3 interchangeable weapons and the 2 grenade types. Another key feature of the ARS suit is your ability to propel yourself around terrains and slow down time. You’ll need to use all of these abilities in sequence in order to repel the constant and persistent waves of enemy forces.
The terrains are beautifully articulated and provide a stimulating backdrop to the non-stop battles. The soundtrack for the game is action packed as well, barraging beats and riffs keep the game bumping as you flail robots with metal spray. Fans of Resident Evil 5 will have no problem sinking their teeth into the control scheme which is not only responsive, but can be leveraged in many different ways thanks to all of the inherit abilities of the ARS.
Boss fights are nothing short of legendary and promise to keep you on your toes. You’ll fight massive robots, waves of battle drones on high speed rail lines, star wars-esk mech suits, stationary weapons and more.
This game is a trip. Giving you a complex and challenging scoring system as well as consistent ways to upgrade your weaponry all to a futuristic environment all to a well-produced soundtrack. This is an action arcade third person shooter you won’t want to pass up.
