Defense contractor Telephonics Corp. has won a $13.25 million contract to manufacture friend-or-foe interrogator systems for NATO's E-3A AWACS fleet, the Department of Defense announced.

The systems are designed to let the E-3As identify friendly military and civilian aircraft as part of their airborne warning and control mission.

Telephonics, which employs about 1,100 workers on Long Island, will perform the work at facilities in Huntington and Farmingdale, a spokesman said.

Work on the contract is expected to be completed by November 2017.

Telephonics is a subsidiary of Griffon Corp., a publicly traded company based in Manhattan.
