KEY EVENT: Signs of growth. In May the number of Long Islanders with jobs reached its highest point since last July and was the highest for any May since 2008. With many Long Island positions based on seasonal summer jobs, the number of people working may grow even higher over the next few months. A first look at how the summer may shape up comes Tuesday, when the state Labor Department releases June unemployment rates and people employed in Nassau and Suffolk.
MONDAY: Earnings from Hasbro, IBM and Morgan Stanley.
TUESDAY: Earnings from Apple, Microsoft, Verizon Communications and Yahoo.
WEDNESDAY: Existing home sales for June from the National Association of Realtors and single-family home prices for May from the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Earnings: Lake Success bank company Astoria Financial, Westbury bank company New York Community Bancorp, American Express, Boeing, Coca-Cola.
THURSDAY: Jobless benefits claims for the week ended July 18 from the U.S. Labor Department. Also, leading economic indicators for June from the Conference Board. Earnings: CA Technologies, Capital One, General Motors, Starbucks, Visa.
FRIDAY: The Commerce Department posts new home sales for June. Earnings: Roosevelt Field mall owner Simon Property Group.
