The Week Ahead: Nov. 10-14

KEY EVENT: Holiday cheer? Will consumers be in the mood to spend when the holiday-shopping season officially opens later this month? Earnings reports and future guidance from several major retailers, government data on retail sales in October and a look at consumer sentiment may yield answers.

MONDAY: Earnings from Melville broadcast graphics systems provider ChyronHego, casino hotel owner Caesars Entertainment and auction house Sotheby's.

TUESDAY: For Veteran's Day, the stock market is open, but the bond market is closed. Earnings: homebuilder D.R. Horton.

WEDNESDAY: The National Federation of Independent Business posts its small-business optimism index for October. Earnings: Melville power tools maker P&F Industries, Cisco Systems, Macy's.

THURSDAY: Jobless benefits claims for the week ended Nov. 8 from the Labor Department. U.S. Treasury releases its October budget, a monthly update on the deficit. Earnings: Nordstrom, Kohl's, Viacom, Wal-Mart.

FRIDAY: The Commerce Department reports on retail sales in October and business inventories in September. Also, the University of Michigan releases its report on consumer sentiment in early November. Also, import and export prices for October from the Labor Department. Earnings: construction services provider Jacobs Engineering.
