KEY EVENT: Jobs report. A surge of hiring nationally last month helped brighten the U.S. employment picture. Will this carry over to Nassau and Suffolk? The answer comes Thursday when the state Labor Department releases the number of Long Island jobs created in September.
MONDAY: On Columbus Day the stock market is open, but the bond market is closed.
TUESDAY: The small business optimism index for September from the National Federation of Independent Business. Earnings: Citigroup, Intel, Johnson & Johnson, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo.
WEDNESDAY: Former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke speaks at the Long Island Association fall luncheon in Woodbury. Also, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York releases the October Empire State manufacturing survey. And two key September reports: retail sales from the Commerce Department and producer prices from the Labor Department. Earnings: Lake Success bank company Astoria Financial, Bank of America, eBay.
THURSDAY: Jobless benefits claims for the week ended Oct. 11 from the U.S. Labor Department. Earnings: Capital One, Goldman Sachs, Mattel.
FRIDAY: The Commerce Department releases September housing starts. Also, consumer sentiment in early October from the University of Michigan. Earnings: Bank of New York Mellon, General Electric.
