The Week Ahead, Sept. 8-12

KEY EVENT: Hold the phone. This is the big one: The big iPhone, that is. Apple on Tuesday is expected to unveil two next-generation iPhones with a bigger screens than past versions. The company is also expected to display a long-awaited smartwatch at the same event near Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

MONDAY: Consumer credit for July from the Federal Reserve. Earnings: Campbell Soup, home-goods retailer Restoration Hardware.

TUESDAY: The National Federation of Independent Business releases its small-business optimism index for August. Earnings: Barnes & Noble, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Pep Boys.

WEDNESDAY: Earnings from telecommunications-services provider Comverse, discount retailer Five Below and apparel seller Men's Wearhouse.

THURSDAY: Jobless benefits claims for the week ended Sept. 6 from the Labor Department. Also, the Treasury Department releases information from its August budget, a monthly accounting of the nation's deficit. Earnings: Carle Place florist and gift seller 1- 800-Flowers.com, No. 1 U.S. supermarket owner Kroger, Ulta Beauty.

FRIDAY: Retail sales from the Commerce Department and import and export prices from the Labor Department, both for August. Also, consumer sentiment for early September from the University of Michigan. Earnings: Olive Garden owner Darden Restaurants.
