Theresa Ward was elected unanimously chairman of the board of directors of the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency on Tuesday.
Ward, the county commissioner of economic development and planning, has served on the seven-member IDA board since being named commissioner in December.
She follows Joanne Minieri in both positions. Minieri resigned last year after accepting a job with RXR Realty.
The IDA offers tax breaks to expanding businesses. It has frequently, but not always, been led by Suffolk’s economic development commissioner.
Last month Ward had been expected to become IDA chairman, but the election was postponed after it became clear other board members were interested in running.
Longtime board member and treasurer Peter Zarcone Jr., an officer in Local 66 of the General Building and Construction Laborers union, had said he wanted to be IDA chairman. He has served on the IDA board for 11 years.
Zarcone did not run for chairman on Tuesday and instead was re-elected treasurer.
Also re-elected to one-year terms were Grant Hendricks, vice chairman, and Anthony Giordano, secretary.
All board members serve without compensation and are appointed by the county legislature.
