Newburgh police responding to what they thought was a two-car accident on Little Britain Road early Saturday got a surprise when they rolled up on the scene.

It was actually a one-car accident, but the 2004 four-door Nissan sedan had split in two, Newburgh police say.

Police said that about 1 a.m. Saturday the driver of the vehicle swerved to avoid a deer on the road and crashed into a tree.

The driver was removed from the vehicle by emergency officers and transported to Westchester Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition over the weekend.

An update on her condition was not available Monday and police did not release her name or age.

A female passenger in the car was unhurt and was outside the car when emergency officials arrived, police say.
