City and Town beach

Residents pay an annual fee for a recreational pass that can be purchased at Cedar Marina on Ocean Parkway, Phelps Lane Park in North Babylon (May 10-June 23) or Tanner Park in Copiague after June 24. See or call 631-893-2100 for prices and times for facilities.

Upon entering Cedar Beach, the first thing I noticed was a woman fighting the wind as she set up a birthday party at the Beach Hut picnic tables.  Her name was Maureen Armata and she happened to be the Dock Master at Cedar Beach Marina just across Ocean Parkway. It also happened to be her son's 17th birthday.

"We always have a great time here," she said. "We'll eat plenty of lobster, listen to some free music, and watch the volleyball tonight."

It was Thursday night and this meant Lobster Fest at the Beach Hut, where you can get 1 ¼ lobster for $17 along with drink specials starting at 5pm. The same goes for Tuesdays and live bands provide entertainment every night of the week. The bar and grill offers frozen tropical drinks, snacks, and an upgrade to typical beach fare with clams, shrimp, crab and more.
Grab your food, take a seat, and observe the vast volleyball area, where a league plays Monday through Thursday. Signs advertise that they are looking for more players to join.
Once you find yourself ready to hit the waves, don't be discouraged by the long stretch of sand ahead of you. This beach provides a free shuttle that is constantly taking people to and from the water. Although it was designed for families with lots of kids and equipment or the elderly who have trouble walking, the shuttle does not discriminate and runs seven days a week from 10am-5pm.

Surfing and fishing are allowed outside of swim areas, and body boarding is welcome anywhere. The wide open space also includes a playground for the little ones.
Cedar Beach Marina, across Ocean Parkway from the beach, offers 63 boat slips where boaters can stay overnight if they wish. It is also home to 43 camp sites, where people are encouraged to bring their own trailers. Tents are not allowed.
