City Council OKs expanded paid sick leave

The bill requires businesses with five or more employees to provide paid sick leave.

MANHATTAN - The New York City Council has passed a bill that significantly expands paid sick leave to city workers.

The new bill requires businesses with five or more employees to provide paid sick leave. The previous law required businesses with 15 or more employees to provide paid sick leave.

Support from City Council was not unanimous. Councilman Steven Matteo (R-Staten Island) says the bill unnecessarily burdens small businesses during a period of economic recovery.

The bill has the support of Mayor Bill de Blasio

An enforcement agency will also audit and inspect to ensure businesses are abiding by the new law.
