Auto Doc: Infiniti paint discolors

The 2013 Infiniti G-Series.

The 2013 Infiniti G-Series.

Dear Doctor: Have a 2013 Infiniti G37x and I've begun to notice discoloration on the metal chrome above the doors and the rubber stripping just under the metal for the door windows. I'm told it's caused by water sprinklers. Sometimes the car is parked near a neighbor who uses well water sprinkler on their lawn. Is there is a good solution (product) to the discolored brown/purple drops on the chrome? -- Tara

Dear Tara: I live in Massachusetts where we have our own well water. Whenever I wash a vehicle I use the Mr. Clean water purifier system at the end of the hose, or else there will be more water spots than you could ever imagine! There are also water purifiers that connect to the home water outlet that work effectively. I also use a product called Wax As-U-Dry. It is a spray-on product that helps eliminate all water spots as you wipe the car dry. There are also many wax and cleaning products that clean and seal the aluminum finish and other products for the rubber seals. I would check with the dealer and ask for their recommendations. -- Doctor

Dear Doctor: When driving either my 2003 Chevy Suburban or my 2011 Toyota Prius, the AM radio stations get awful interference/static as I drive near a lot of pole-elevated electric/phone/cable lines. Other than switching to FM or the CD player, is there anything I can do? -- Bill

Dear Bill: This is more of a common problem than you would think. The AM band needs a clear shot to the antenna. The AM band is affected by buildings, lighting, valleys, especially more so as most A/M stations adjust their power down between dust and dawn. There are some signal enhancer's sold at radio and electronic stores that may help. Another reason for poor AM reception is the automakers put more effort into the FM band and other areas of the audio system. -- Doctor

Dear Doctor: I have a 2004 Ram 1500 pickup with the V-8 and automatic transmission. When I drive 50 mph, we feel air coming out of the glove box. The vents are closed and I do not have the fan on. When I open the glove box, we can feel the cold air coming in. This a problem for the person sitting in the passenger seat. They need a blanket to keep them warm in the cold weather, even with the heater on. What is the problem? -- Phil

Dear Phil: To locate the source of the air infiltration, the technician will remove the glove box door and glove box insert and look at the firewall bulkhead for any open holes and/or missing rubber grommets. If there is nothing visible, then two technicians will take  the truck for a ride. One will drive and the other will look for the air infiltration. -- Doctor

Dear Doctor: I'd like to share with you my experience with unintended acceleration when applying the brake. I'm tall (6'5") and noticed that sometimes my foot was rolling off the brake while simultaneously rolling onto the gas pedal, causing the engine to race (even though there is no linkage between the gas and the brake). Just my experience. Once I became aware of it, I did not allow it to happen again! -- Allen

Dear Allen: Driving a motor vehicle takes a lot of attention. There are many times when a driver's foot can slip off the brake pedal and onto the gas pedal and some drivers may not realize this has happened. This can be a very serious condition and dangerous. -- Doctor

Dear Doctor: Have you researched the 2015 Ford Fiesta yet? -- Brad

Dear Brad: Glad you asked, yes, the 2015 now has a three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine. This EcoBoost engine has 123 horsepower and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The driving experience on the winding back roads, shifting through the manual gears was enjoyable. The three-cylinder turbo power combined with the 5 speed manual transmission work well together. EPA is 31/43/36 mpg. -- Doctor
