With high school and college students heading back to class, having a fun and affordable ride will be as important to some as having the right school supplies. To help parents and scholars alike find the right set of wheels, Kelley Blue Book put together a top 10 list of back-to-school cars. According to KBB, this year's wide-ranging list includes a small SUV, a 50-mpg hybrid and an all-wheel drive option, and every car starts under $20,000.
1. Honda Fit
The 130-horsepower Honda Fit is the top-ranked back-to-school car on Kelly Blue Book's list. With gas mileage coming in at an EPA estimated 33/41 mpg city/highway, KBB says a fair purchase price is $16,150 before taxes and fees.
2. Kia Soul /ao
The 2014 Kia Soul has a city/highway mpg split of 24/30. A fair purchase price is $14,946 before taxes and fees, according to Kelly Blue Book.
3. Nissan Versa
The Nissan Versa offers an EPA estimated 27/36 city/highway mpg. Kelly Blue Book's fair purchase price is $14,108 before taxes and fees.
The sporty Mazda3 has an EPA mpg city/highway split of 30/41. Kelly Blue Book's fair purchase price is $17,032 before taxes and fees.
5. Toyota Prius
The Hybrid Toyota Prius C offers a 53/46 split city/highway EPA estimated mpg. Kelly Blue Book says the fair purchase price before taxes and fees is $18,696.
6. Honda Civic
The Civic is the second Honda on Kelley Blue Book's list of best back-to-school cars. Offering an EPA estimated 30/39 mpg city/highway, the Civic's fair purchase price, according to KBB, is $17,452 before taxes and fees.
7. Chevrolet Sonic
The first American car on the list, the Sonic comes in with a 26/35 mpg city/highway split, according to EPA estimates. KBB says a fair purchase price for the Chevrolet is $15,164 before taxes and fees.
8. Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
The lone SUV on the list, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport offers an EPA estimated mpg of 24/31 city/highway. Kelley Blue Book says a fair purchase price before taxes and fees is $19,173.
9. Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf drives in as the only European car to make the back-to-school list. With an EPA estimated 26/37 mpg city/highway, KBB does not offer a fair purchase price, but noted the manufacturer's suggested price is $18,815.
10. Subaru Impreza
Kelley Blue Book touts the Impreza as the "most affordable all-wheel-drive" one can buy. Offering a solid EPA mpg estimated 27/36 city/highway, KBB says the fair purchase price is $17,748.
