While Chevy's Volt is probably the most popular mass-produced electric hybrid vehicle on the road, the Detroit automaker is looking to expand its powertrain offerings with a clean diesel, or ultralow sulfur diesel, version of its Cruze Compact.
No word yet on its fuel economy, but as a reference, a diesel version of the Cruze is already sold in Europe, and it pushes 163 horsepower with an impressive 50.4 miles per gallon. While the current gen American gasoline Cruze has an Eco model that gets 42 mpg highway.
So a combined 50 mpg mark like its European counterpart could be likely.
Chevrolet said it will release the diesel version of the Cruze in 2013.
