Why it's for sale: Cal and Cathy built this home 20 years ago to raise their children and now say they want to downsize.

Calvin, 62, a retired home builder, and Cathy, 58, an interior designer for Ethan Allen, are not only the original owners, but Cal built the house after many years of building houses for others.

He incorporated clever features, such as a dumbwaiter from the three-car basement garage to the kitchen, a laundry chute from the master bedroom into the laundry room, and a well-thought-out terraced backyard that ensures that any kids in the pool are within eyeshot of someone in the kitchen.

But those features are second to the luxury of this six-bedroom, 41/2-bathroom Colonial home with top-of-the-line amenities on one acre in the Nissequogue Overlook area of Smithtown, as he explains:

"The view from the rear of the home out to a parklike backyard, complete with a pool, pool house and tennis court, is my favorite feature."
