THE SCOOP Residents of Lake Grove live in a quaint village setting that offers an abundance of shopping options. “Anything you need is within a couple minutes from wherever you live,” says Kevin LaValle, a Town of Brookhaven council member.
That’s thanks in large part to the village’s main attraction: the Smith Haven Mall. Earlier this year, the area surrounding the mall has added popular eateries, including Shake Shack and Chipotle. Other popular chains in the area include Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Costco, LA Fitness, Miller’s Ale House and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
But beyond the commercial areas is the tranquillity of what LaValle calls a “well-run village” set to celebrate its 50th year of incorporation in 2018.
“With the property values here for prospective homeowners, I think they get the bang for their buck,” LaValle says. “The village does a very good job in maintaining roads, promoting local business and keeping their eye on the bottom line, making sure they provide great services for the amount residents pay.”
The most common housing styles in the area are Colonials and ranches, says longtime Lake Grove resident Diane Aversano of Re/Max Eastern Properties. Prices, she says, generally range from around $370,000 to $650,000. She says that in addition to the second phase of a housing development being built on Moriches Road, there are also high-end spec houses being constructed in the area. Lake Grove is also home to The Bristal Assisted Living Lake Grove and Encore at Lake Grove, a gated 55-and-over development.
Aversano calls Lake Grove “a well-maintained village that we take a lot of pride in.” The area, she adds, also boasts village-run parks, walking trails, its own sanitation department, summer camps for village residents and the Lake Grove Village Recreation Hall, which hosts various functions.
Lake Grove is home to the First Congregational Church of New Village, which is more than 200 years old, and a memorial park that honors veterans, first responders and those lost on Sept. 11.

Between Aug. 1, 2016, and Aug. 31, 2017, there were 125 home sales, with a median sale price of $369,900, according to the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island. The low price for that period was $136,500 and the high was $827,500. During that period a year earlier, there were 119 home sales with a median sale price of $350,000. The price range was $150,000 to $870,000.
