A 90-year-old Centerport home built for a local sea captain may not be surrounded by water, but there sure is a lot of green space. It’s on the market for $558,900.
When Robert and Deborah Schirone bought their house in 1989, Robert, a biologist, planted an organic garden. Deborah Schirone says the pair also planted various perennials, grasses and trees that surround fountains, particularly behind a wall of windows leading to the backyard. They also grow herbs and vegetables in the summer.
The eat-in area and den of the three-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom house are lined with Mediterranean-style hand-painted clay tiles, and cathedral ceilings and French doors to a Juliette balcony were added to the master bedroom in an expansion. Robert says he built a custom travertine fireplace in the living room. “We definitely kept it in character,” Deborah says of the remodeling. “We’ve completely redone the bathroom upstairs too — all re-tiled. It’s really a cute little home.”
The house, which just went into contract, is listed with Kenneth Kroncke of Realty Connect USA.
