When Alan Weissberg bought his chalet-style cedar home in the Shinnecock Hills area of Southampton about 20 years ago, he was attracted to it because it was like a ski home "just like you would find in Vermont or Northern California," he says.
Because of the heavily wooded 0.60-acre property, "when it snows, you feel like you're in the Swiss Alps," he says. But the home, which he is now selling for $989,000, is a four- to six-minute walk from Shinnecock Bay and Cold Spring Pond and a six-minute drive to ocean beaches, seemingly combining the best of two worlds.
Except for two bedrooms, the interior's walls are of high-grade cedar, says Weissberg, adding, "It's a wonderful thing to walk in and smell that cedar."
The improvements Weissberg and his wife, Marcia, made to the three-bedroom, three-bath home are significant. In addition to a new kitchen with granite counters, new bathrooms and new oak floors throughout the main floor, they installed a free-form pool with a black liner to resemble a pond.
Weissberg says the 1,736-square-foot home really has four bedrooms. There's a large area for guests that has its own bathroom and access to the pool and a private deck. That's in addition to a loft area currently home to a piano and a large-screen, high-definition TV.
The home is listed with Aaron Curti and Oona Cree of Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Southampton.
