THE SCOOP At the center of East Hills is a village park that “has been the attraction for the last 12 years of people wanting to live in East Hills,” says village Mayor Michael Koblenz. “The park has everything.”
A nine-year transformation turned the site of a former military base into a 50-acre, resident-only park called the Park at East Hills, which opened in 2006. It features a 12,000-square-foot pool with a 110-foot slide, tennis courts, ballfields, a fitness center, playgrounds, a senior center, a theater, a dog park, nature trails and more.
“The park offers a variety of activities for all ages,” says resident Brooke Levy of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty’s office in East Hills. That includes concerts, fireworks shows and other events for children and the community.
The village, which celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2016, features both historical and newly constructs homes, with Colonials and ranches being the most common style, Levy says. Prices, she adds, range from around $800,000 to new homes that can command more than $3 million.
There is turnover in the village, “but whatever is on the market is selling quickly,” she says.
In November, the village acquired a century-old gate lodge that presides over the entrance to East Hills and Roslyn and received a $193,000 donation to restore the landmark.
Elsewhere within the village, there are “probably 40 other houses being constructed by developers and individuals at the present time,” Koblenz says.
The North Shore village, set 350 feet above sea level, offers a quick commute into Manhattan via train or the Long Island Expressway. Situated about 12 miles from both John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, East Hills in recent years has sought help from Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead in suing the FAA over excessive airplane noise in the area.
Roslyn High School in February was recognized by the Education Department as one of 24 Long Island schools demonstrating high academic achievement.
The village is also home to the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center.
