The good news is that the winner will win a brand-new fully furnished 3,900-square-foot contemporary Pueblo-style home, a brand-new GMC Terrain SUV and $500,00 in cash. The not-so-good news is that the home is not on Long Island. It’s located in Sandia Park, N.M., nestled among the majestic San Pedro Mountains halfway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

But that shouldn’t stop anyone from entering. Mere details!

Search Newsday for over 100,000 homes

This is the 14th year HGTV has held the contest, and this year’s contest offers the largest cash portion

When asked how the geographic location of the homes is selected, HGTV spokeswoman Emily Yarborough, said, “The house planner, who has done 13 of the 14 homes with us, does research all over the country to find areas that have a dreamlike quality. And we hadn’t yet done a home in the Southwest.” The home that received the most entries was the grand and spectacular log cabin-styled home in Lake Lure, N.C., in 2006.

There is no cash equivalent available if the winner chooses to not accept the home, but winners are free to sell the home upon winning it. Yarborough notes that every winner has said it was well worth entering the contest.

The 2005 Dream Home winners actually moved from their Chicago residence and lived in the Tyler, Texas, home before selling it three years later. And the California family who won the 1998 Beaufort, S.C., home kept it as a vacation spot for extended family use for eight years.

One winner fulfilled her lifelong dream and bought a horse farm. Another used the proceeds to renovate her existing home to resemble the one she won.
