It’s possible to own two cottages plus a two-car garage in the Hamptons for $650,000. The Hampton Bays lot is a total of .63 acres and is about 300 yards from the Great Peconic Bay -- and, while the cottages may need to be renovated, they are on a historic piece of land, says the owner Gillian Lankshear.
“The property was originally part of a much larger area owned by the Holzman family, who go back many years in this community,” says Lankshear, who researched the home via the Southampton Historical Society and the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead.
“When Southampton Town was purchased from the Shinnecock Indians over 300 years ago, it included the thin tract of land connecting Peconic Bay with Shinnecock Bay known as Canoe Place," she adds.
This served as the center of a canoe portage used by the Indians for fishing and hunting.
The remains of a fort are at the top of what is now Fort Hill Road in Hampton Bays, where the home is situated.
