When Jim Cardone visited a friend’s new house on Shelter Island, he was looking for a place to retire with his wife, Susan. Before long, they bought 1.12 acres bordering the Mashomack Preserve and built this 2,950-square-foot Contemporary-style home in 2001.
“I fell in love with the island,” he says.
Now listed for $950,000, the four-bedroom, three-bath residence near Wade’s Beach features a wraparound deck that spans three-quarters of the home — a late addition to the architect’s original plans.
“It was supposed to be a smaller deck, but we decided to do a whole wraparound deck,” Cardone says.
The couple also added a climate-controlled solarium to the original plans.
An open floor plan includes a living room with 16-foot ceilings, clerestory windows, a stone fireplace and sliding doors to the deck. The formal dining room flows to a large galley kitchen with granite surfaces, stainless steel appliances and wraparound cabinets. Andersen windows and resurfaced wood floors are found throughout the home.
A kitchen hallway leads to the first-floor master bedroom suite, which has a walk-in closet, skylight, en-suite full bath and sliders to the deck. A second-story master suite has a skylight and private deck.
The backyard includes a stone terrace, pergola with wisteria and boulder-lined pond. There is about a quarter-acre of gardens, Cardone says; plantings include a traditional English-style formal garden, pine trees and perennials.
The home includes central HVAC, a full, unfinished basement, attached one-car garage and automatic propane generator.
